Snail Care
Alex woke up this morning showing a cranky, cranky boy. Tears were constant. Runny nose, that needed to be wiped every 2.5 seconds and then the tell tale sign of the tugging of his left ear.
So after a crazy morning of being solo with the kiddos, I took them to Grace’s (she is in class with Katie and also goes to LCC) party, which he of course fell promptly asleep in the van. He woke up as soon as I rousted him from his comfy Britax Boulevard and ran free in the house, loving the new toys. The girls loved being with friends, coloring Minnie Mouse hats and eating pizza.

Alas we had to leave the party early as Katie had a soccer game. Alex vascilated between happy and miserable. Playing with the soccer ball with Brianna. He kept trying to sleep in my shoulder and my arms felt like lead after holding him so long. As soon as the game was over, I packed him up and took him to Children’s Close to Home Urgent Care, while Katie went with my parents and Brianna went with Brian, as she had a game later in the afternoon.
I was worried about the hours of the Urgent Care because I heard they were “wierd” and we had only been there twice before, both of which were weekdays. Thankfully they were open from 12-8.
We checked in around 1pm and I learned that I should definitely have Brian’s SS number memorized, I had to make a quick phone call for that, of course he didn’t answer and of course I had left my phone in the van, so I went to go get it, but first I had to go back because of course I had left my keys inside! Finally got all the info done and sat down to wait.
Alex of course didn’t want to sit still, so he roamed the waiting room, pushing the children’s chairs, and taking pamphlets and moving them from table to table. We were finally called back after about 45 min! Not too bad I thought, considering all the people in the waiting room, all of which had masks on. He got weighed (23 lbs.) and got his temp taken and blood pressure checked, I was asked questions about why we were there and then they told us to go back out to wait as there was no room available.
We waited, I chased him down, he looked at the fish, we read a book. We waited some more, he drank some milk, I chased him down, he looked at the fish, we read a book. And so on and so on.
Finally we were called back and put in a room! It was 2:15. I changed his diaper, and he ran circles in the room. Then started fussing, the wait was taking a toll. He played with my keys, the amusement wore off. He flipped the light switch off and on while I held him. That too didn’t stay funny for too long. I read a book, 4 times.
Finally the doctor came in. He asked me some questions, listened to his chest, it was clear, checked his ears, left one definitely infected, right was just fine, checked his throat, it too was fine. Said the nurse would bring in a pescription for amoxicillin.
We waited, and I walked circles around the room as I tried to get him to go to sleep.
Finally the nurse came in with my paper work and the script and we were out the door at 3:15.
Alex fell asleep by the time we were out of the parking lot.
2 hours and 15 minutes at Urgent Care.
Not fun.
Especially when I’m used to sitting down for no more than 10 minutes before being called back for our pediatrician!
After getting the drugs in him, he’s feeling slightly better, praying that he has a restful night!

Hi Veronica, visiting from SITS.
Your kids are soooo adorable!!I hope Alex is doing fine after such an ordeal. I don’t have kids, but I’m sure its absolutely no fun to sit around in the waiting room for 2 hours with them.
Good luck with everything.
Poor baby.
Oh he’s adorable. His eyes speak volumes.
Ear infections are so horrible! I hope he has a fast recovery.
Hi, visiting from SITS!
I hope Alex is feeling better now.
Awww, poor little guy – I hope he’s feeling better! Ear infections are the worst. My little guy, who’s 20 months, has gotten several of them, and I always feel so helpless to make him feel better when he has one. Good luck!
I love that he doesn’t look amused in that picture!
I hope he’s feeling better!! ((hugs)) I can’t believe how big he is!
I despise going to any kind of urgent care I don’t *need* to (which clearly you did) and I always fear it!
It sounds like you have a great pediatrician though if they never keep you waiting more than 10 minutes! I think it’s important that they realize how hard it is for kids to wait, and even though we all want our questions answered, it is really tough to sit there with a fidgety toddler!
Hop he’s feeling a bit better by now!
Poor baby! Anytime you have to take a sick kid to the doctor it’s awful. At least he can look cute while being sick.
