The Great Outdoors

This weekend was long, exhausting and tons of fun! We spent a good deal of it outside with soccer games, cell leader appreciation day at Marmon Valley Farm, pumpkin picking at Kuhlwein’s Farm, and a pumpkin carving party at my good friend Kelly’s parents house.

FallOct24251

Brianna’s last soccer game! Trophies and an “Undefeated Season” award!

FallOct24252

Alex and I in the play barn at Marmon Valley.

FallOct24253

Brianna and Brian and their horses. A first time for riding for both of them. Brianna scared one time, Brian three! Katie was a mess, you had to be 6 to ride and she pouted pretty much the whole time they were gone. It broke my heart to see her sad because she was left out.

FallOct24254

Brian threatened to wear shin guards to the pumpkin patch at Kuhlwein’s, I was highly embarrassed. Thankfully he took them off when he got there! Oh and go Phillies, going to the World Series for the second year in a row!!!!

FallOct24255

On the hayride! Father and son, I love these two so much!

FallOct24256

Starting the corn maze, this was a lot of fun, though it didn’t take us too long to find the way out!

FallOct24257

Me and my precious girls! I need to get this pic printed and framed, I love it, and them :)

FallOct24258

Katie’s turn on a horse! She got to do the pony ride all by herself since she couldn’t ride the horses at Marmon Valley. Thrilled she had a chance to do it!

FallOct24259

The kids in the bounce house. When they came out, Alex pitched the biggest fit. He was kicking and screaming and I could barely hold him in his stroller to get his shoes on! He wanted back into the bouncy and now!

FallOct242510

Kates picking a pumpkin! We couldn’t pick them out in the field because it was too muddy.

FallOct242511

Alex loved rolling them, picking them up, dropping them. Pitched another royal fit when it was time to be put back into the stroller to head back to the van. He’s been getting ornery this last week, definitely wanting independence!

FallOct242512

Coach Tressel at the pumpkin carving party! Okay, not really, Kelly’s Dad just happens to look a lot like him! He played a lot with Alex, it was really cute seeing them interact :)

FallOct242513

Pumpkin carving time! I have a really great picture of Kelly making this crazy ugly face, but I’m being good and not posting it. Though it won’t stop me from blowing it up to mini poster size and giving it to her for Christmas haha!

FallOct242514

All the kids in front of their pumpkins. Kelly’s Dad gave out awards for each one. Brianna’s was most geometric nose! Katie’s most teeth and therefore most likely to become a dentist!

Snail Care

Alex woke up this morning showing a cranky, cranky boy. Tears were constant. Runny nose, that needed to be wiped every 2.5 seconds and then the tell tale sign of the tugging of his left ear.

So after a crazy morning of being solo with the kiddos, I took them to Grace’s (she is in class with Katie and also goes to LCC)  party, which he of course fell promptly asleep in the van. He woke up as soon as I rousted him from his comfy Britax Boulevard and ran free in the house, loving the new toys. The girls loved being with friends, coloring Minnie Mouse hats and eating pizza.

Alas we had to leave the party early as Katie had a soccer game. Alex vascilated between happy and miserable. Playing with the soccer ball with Brianna. He kept trying to sleep in my shoulder and my arms felt like lead after holding him so long. As soon as the game was over, I packed him up and took him to Children’s Close to Home Urgent Care, while Katie went with my parents and Brianna went with Brian, as she had a game later in the afternoon.

I was worried about the hours of the Urgent Care because I heard they were “wierd” and we had only been there twice before, both of which were weekdays. Thankfully they were open from 12-8.

We checked in around 1pm and I learned that I should definitely have Brian’s SS number memorized, I had to make a quick phone call for that, of course he didn’t answer and of course I had left my phone in the van, so  I went to go get it, but first I had to go back because of course I had left my keys inside! Finally got all the info done and sat down to wait.

Alex of course didn’t want to sit still, so he roamed the waiting room, pushing the children’s chairs, and taking pamphlets and moving them from table to table. We were finally called back after about 45 min! Not too bad I thought, considering all the people in the waiting room, all of which had masks on. He got weighed (23 lbs.) and got his temp taken and blood pressure checked, I was asked questions about why we were there and then they told us to go back out to wait as there was no room available.

We waited, I chased him down, he looked at the fish, we read a book. We waited some more, he drank some milk, I chased him down, he looked at the fish, we read a book. And so on and so on.

Finally we were called back and put in a room! It was 2:15. I changed his diaper, and he ran circles in the room. Then started fussing, the wait was taking a toll. He played with my keys, the amusement wore off. He flipped the light switch off and on while I held him. That too didn’t stay funny for too long. I read a book, 4 times.

Finally the doctor came in. He asked me some questions, listened to his chest, it was clear, checked his ears, left one definitely infected, right was just fine, checked his throat, it too was fine. Said the nurse would bring in a pescription for amoxicillin.

We waited, and I walked  circles around the room as I tried to get him to go to sleep.

Finally the nurse came in with my paper work and the script and we were out the door at 3:15.

Alex fell asleep by the time we were out of the parking lot.

2 hours and 15 minutes at Urgent Care.

Not fun.

Especially when I’m used to sitting down for no more than 10 minutes before being called back for our pediatrician!

After getting the drugs in him, he’s feeling slightly better, praying that he has a restful night!

Starry Night

Last night Brian told me to come outside, he wanted to show me how nice and cool the fall night was.

I followed him out the door and onto the front walk.

Barefoot on the chilled cement.

Watching my step as I went.

I was afraid I would step on a bug, spider or worse yet a worm (deathly afraid of worms).

He commented on the crisp night air.

I agreed that it felt nice as I glanced up at the sky.

It was crystal clear, the moon illuminating the sky, the stars shining bold and bright.

I was instantly reminded of the past.

I was pregnant with our first child.

He was still in school.

Separated by 400 miles.

Reunited every other weekend.

I would pace the driveway at night while talking to him on the phone.

The chilled cement underfoot, though I wore shoes.

Inhaling the crisp night air.

Gazing at the bold, bright stars.

Being comforted by the sound of his voice.

Knowing the same stars I was looking at, so beautiful, were over his head too.

Feeling peace.
