Cloth Diapering..

I’ve been thinking about taking the plunge into cloth diapers, but I need info and lots of it and I want personal experiences as well..

I’ve mostly been looking into fuzzi bunz..

How many do I need in each size?

What about inserts?

Is the resale value good?

What was making the switch from disposable to cloth like?

How do your husbands like it?

Did you meet resistance (like from family members) and how did you handle it?

Any and all information would be great!!!!

Thanks ladies 🙂

Fuzzi Bunz are good diapers and are relatively cheap. http://www.fuzzibunzseconds.com is a great place to buy too, I Have some 2nds I bought off Nonie and they are perfect. I have no idea why they’re seconds.
However, you might find that once you start cding you want to expand to other diapers.

How many do I need in each size?
This depends on how often you want to do diaper laundry. At least 12, that would be doing laundry everyday most likely.

    What about inserts?
I am a huge fan of microfiber. You just can’t beat the absorbancy.

    Is the resale value good?
If your diapers are in good condition then yes resale is really good!

What was making the switch from disposable to cloth like?
We didn’t use disposables with S so I don’t know, I planed to cd her from day 1. By then we’d been without a diapered baby for 2 years.

How do your husbands like it?
Ben is so supportive and he loves it. Almost everytime we go shopping and we see someone buying disposables he comments on how glad he is we don’t have to buy diapers. He says that it may seem like a large investment at first but in the long run it isn’t. He pointed out that I haven’t bought any new diapers for S in months. You can make it cheap or expensive. If you want to you can go with prefolds (which are fabulous and work really well) or you can go with something more pricey.

Did you meet resistance (like from family members) and how did you handle it?
Mine and Ben’s family have been supportive for the most part. They accepted a long time ago that I’m crazy so I think nothing surprises them anymore. Whatever resistance I may have met I was so set on this decision it didn’t matter. The most I got was “Oh yeah it’ll last a week and then you’ll be buying disposables.” Nope, almost 2 years and S has only used sposies when we moved from AK.

The first thing I tell moms is that cding is very addictive. It is like a drug. I know it seems silly but it is.
Join cding if you’re not a member, there’s a lot of information there. http://community.livejournal.com/clothdiapering/profile

Don’t stress too much, it’s not as overwhelming as it seems. If you have any ?’s you can ask me!

I have about 6 small Fuzzi Bunz’s. I didn’t buy the extra-smalls because everyone said their baby grew out of them so fast. Well, at 9lbs, 5oz, the smalls didn’t start fitting Cole in the thigh until just about a week ago. I wish I had bought some x-smalls.

I now have 5 Bum Genius one-size diapers and I LOVE them. The one-size insert that comes with them will last us the whole night now that Cole is not pooping at night. I use a smaller insert during the day because they are too bulky with the one-size insert that comes with them. They now also come with a newborn insert…which Cole can fill up rather quickly now. I want to get more of these diapers.

I have 18 infant size prefolds. These ended up being what I primarily used from the end of week one to week three. Most of the pocket dipes just didn’t fit him really well. To cover these I used Thirsties. If you are going to get a PUL cover I highly, highly suggest these! I have four x-smalls that fit him great as a newborn. I have 2 smalls that I have to use to cover a couple of the one-size fitted dipes that I have.

How many do I need in each size? I’ll count my dipes after they come out of the wash in about an hour and get back to this one to let you know how many I use right now. At the beginning I was washing every other day and had used everyone of the prefolds and some of the pocket dipes that did fit.

What about inserts? Microfiber. I have some hemp but I am not wild about them. They are stiff/harder than microfiber and don’t absorb as fast (these are not touching skin but you can tell the different when you pat his bum).

Is the resale value good? I’ve only resold some of the used newborn dipes I bought and I got back about 90% of what I paid. But these were also sought after newborn dipes.

What was making the switch from disposable to cloth like? Much easier than I thought. I didn’t buy any disposables. I just used the package they give you in the hospital and one of the diaper bags they gave us had some more. Once those were gone (and the yucky dark green poop) we were 100% cloth.

How do your husbands like it? Kev doesn’t care either way, but he hasn’t changed a diaper yet. Need to get him trained. lol

Did you meet resistance (like from family members) and how did you handle it? No resistance. My Mom used cloth on us so she thought it was great. Most people were surprised about how different it was compared to what they thought of as cloth (flats pinned on with rubber pants).

I have found that side-snapping diapers don’t work so well for boys. I read that after I had bought some before he was born. And sure enough, every time he has peed out of a diaper it is a side-snapping one (just did it to me this morning as a matter of fact…also had a hemp insert in the diaper – double whammy! and dumb Mommy!)

Cloth wipes are also the way to go! If you buy diposable wipes you need a trash can and a diaper pail near by. If you can sew at all you can probably make these yourself for super cheap.

Ok, I think this is enough for now! lol I learned a lot in the cloth_diapering community so go join! 🙂

  3. Butting in again-but we are talking diapers here….have you scored any GM’s yet? I’ve seen you on the GM for-sale posts. Or do you have any at all? I bought two right when she started prints and the velours were always in stock. Although I totally love the way they feel, I have not started loving them totally just yet. I can only use them as a night-time dipe because they are just so bulky on him right now, nothing would fit over them. I have one disana wool cover that I need to lanolize and see how that works. Are you a big fan of wool? I need to measure Cole and look into getting some soakers or shorties.

  4. Yes! I have 1 gm and 2 more on their way. I wish I had jumped on them when they just sat instock.
They fit Sophia like a glove. She’s 22 months though, I can imagine they’d be super bulky on a small baby. I remember feeling that way about SOS too, I had an entires stash of SOS for Sophia but they were so bulky she couldn’t really wear them until she was a couple months old.
I love wool. When I first decided to cd I learned to knit because I knew I could never afford the hyena wool. I don’t get a lot of time to knit anymore, so I’ve bought some. I really like interlock. I love Wild Child Woolies, they’re great and affordable. Sophia has a couple sugar snap sets from Sweet Mama Small Sugar that I love too. 2 pairs of Luxe baby wool yoga shorts. You can wash interlock in the washing machine so I love that. She has a bunch of woolybottoms too but I don’t think they work that well as diaper covers. They’re not thick or absorbent enough.

  5. I can crochet (I made my sister two awesome scarves for Christmas and then didn’t take pictures of them!) but they say crochet is not stretchy enough and uses to much yarn for covers. I am not sure I could teach myself to knit without someone IRL to help out. I just need to try I suppose!

I have seen the Luxe baby soakers in FSOT posts and want to try them, but they always seem to be girly colors. Hopefully I will catch one someday. I don’t stalk hyena at all…I have an account but just haven’t done it.

  6. I just looked into the bumgenius ones and those are cool. I really like that it’s one size! I think Brian would be happy with that..

  7. Hey are the BG’s you have the 3.0’s or the 2.0’s?

I was hoping that the 3.0 x-small size would work on a newborn, even if it did give him “bubble butt”

  8. I have both. I will try rolling down the insert stopper to make the “x-small” size that they mention on the 3.0’s the next time I change him. The only concern I would have is if the rise would be low enough to keep the umbilical cord uncovered. The bubble butt isn’t too much of an issue with the newborn insert that comes with it. When I first tried out the 2.0’s on him I used the one-size insert that came with it (it didn’t occur to me to use one of my other inserts) and it made it huge on him. Of course, now it fits fine…..he is up to 11lbs 14oz!

  9. Yeah, try and let me know..

I’m able to get the bg 3’s for 11.75 plus tax and shipping.. There is a store in town that sells them. We’re going to go get a first hand look at them tonight..

  10. Holy cow! That is a smokin’ deal! They are the one-size and not the AIO’s, right? I only say that because the AIO’s have a lower retail cost.

  11. Ok, to me it does not look like the x-small setting is all that different from the small setting. I really don’t think the rise would be low enough to keep the umbilical cord from being covered unless you have a baby close to 10lbs.

I would still suggest prefolds & 4 to 6 covers for the first month. I would think in that time frame he won’t be staying with your Mom so you don’t have to worry about that. Learning to use the snappi is super easy and folding a prefold is not hard at all.

  12. Thanks! I have a friend who is letting me borrow 6-10 (she has to see what she has) kissaluv size 0’s and some bumkin covers..

So I figured I could get more kissaluvs and covers for the newborn stage and then move to the bg’s..

    What do you think?

  13. That sounds good!

I have 3 KL0’s (kissaluv size 0) but only used them once. I bought them used from the cd community and they were not very soft anymore. KL0’s start out super soft and the more they are used the more they loose their softness. But everyone swears by them for newborns. I also had muttaqun newborn diapers ( http://www.muttaqinbaby.com/diapers.html ) and Thirsties fab fitteds in x-small ( http://www.abbyslane.com/catalog.php?category=470 ). I still use the thirsties and I am sad that he is almost out grown them.

Would you be interested in buying some of my newborn stuff (I’ve already sold some)? I have 2 x-small thristies fab fitteds and 4 x-small thristies covers. I also have one newborn mutt. Then I have 3 KL0’s that you could have for free but they are in sad condition. Little bit of staining and the elastic has seen better days. If you have a good cover I can’t see why the elastic would matter.
